Medically reviewed by Dr. Troy Austin, MD — double board-certified plastic surgeon ◆ Updated July 2026

Fat transfer breast augmentation enlarges and reshapes the breasts using your own fat instead of an implant. Dr. Troy Austin removes fat from an area like the abdomen or thighs with gentle liposuction, purifies it, and injects it into the breasts — a natural, roughly one-cup increase with no implant, and body contouring where the fat is taken from. At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery he performs it with the Beautifill® laser system as an outpatient procedure, usually in one to two hours.

Your surgeon

One named surgeon, start to finish.

Fat transfer is as much art as surgery — the result depends on how the fat is harvested, purified, and placed. With Dr. Austin, the surgeon who plans your fat transfer is the surgeon who performs it, every time. An Augusta native, he returned home after years in the cosmetic-surgery mecca of Palm Beach, Florida, and uses the Beautifill® laser system to protect the fat he transfers.

He is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, completed his plastic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia and his general surgery residency at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

Fat transfer is a beautiful option for the right patient — a natural, modest increase using your own tissue. I'll tell you honestly whether it will get you where you want to be, or whether an implant fits your goal better. Dr. Troy Austin

Is it right for you?

Your own fat, not an implant.

Fat transfer isn’t a bigger-is-better procedure — it’s a natural one. It’s ideal if you want a modest, natural increase of about a cup size, prefer no implant, and have some unwanted fat to spare. As a bonus, the donor area is slimmed by liposuction at the same time. If you’re after a larger or more projected size, an implant may serve you better — and Dr. Austin will tell you honestly which path fits your goal.

Both add fullness — but they suit different goals. Here’s how they compare at a glance.

The Beautifill® difference

How fat transfer actually works.

The reason fat transfer used to be unpredictable is that harvesting damaged the fat, so much of it didn’t survive. The Beautifill® laser system was built to solve exactly that — and it’s what Dr. Austin uses.

1. Harvest

Using gentle, laser-assisted liposuction, Dr. Austin removes fat from a donor area you’d like slimmer — commonly the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The laser loosens the fat so it can be collected with less trauma, which helps more of it stay viable.

2. Purify

The harvested fat is processed in the same closed system to separate out fluid, oil, and damaged cells, leaving concentrated, healthy fat ready to transfer.

3. Transfer

Dr. Austin injects the purified fat into the breasts in small, layered amounts — the technique that gives it the best blood supply and the best chance to survive — sculpting a natural, balanced shape.

Why it lasts better

Because the fat is handled gently and placed precisely, a higher proportion survives than with older grafting methods. The fat that establishes a blood supply in the first few months is permanent. Some reabsorption in the early weeks is normal and expected — which is why Dr. Austin plans for it rather than over-promising.

Two results, one procedure. The liposuction that harvests your fat also contours the donor area — so you slim one place while you enhance another.

Investment

How much does fat transfer breast augmentation cost in Augusta?

In the Augusta area, fat transfer breast augmentation typically ranges from $8,400 to $12,500 — it includes liposuction of the donor area, which is part of what makes it more involved than a simple implant. Your exact, all-in price is confirmed in writing at your consultation.

Candidacy, results & recovery

What to expect — honestly.

Are you a candidate?

You may be an excellent candidate if you want a natural, modest increase — roughly a cup size — without an implant, and you have enough fat in a donor area to harvest. Good candidates are in good general health, are non-smokers, and hold realistic expectations. Very slim patients may not have enough donor fat, and anyone wanting a large or very projected result is usually better served by an implant. Dr. Austin will tell you plainly which is true for you.

How much bigger — and will it last?

Fat transfer generally achieves about a one-cup increase per session. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed in the first weeks; the fat that survives is permanent, and your result settles over three to six months. It’s an honest trade: a natural look and feel with your own tissue, in exchange for a modest, not dramatic, size change.

Beautiful in combination

Fat transfer pairs naturally with other procedures: with a breast lift if there’s sagging, to restore soft volume after an explant, or alongside an implant to refine cleavage and smooth rippling. Dr. Austin will map the right combination at your consultation.

Recovery

  • Days 1–2: soreness at the donor (liposuction) sites more than the breasts; well managed with medication.
  • Days 3–7: many return to desk work; you’ll wear a compression garment on the donor area.
  • Weeks 2–6: swelling settles and you ease back to full activity; avoid heavy pressure on the breasts early on.
  • Months 3–6: the surviving fat is stable and your final shape is in.

Honest expectations first.

Dr. Austin would rather tell you fat transfer won’t reach your goal than sell you a result it can’t deliver.

Good to know

Fat transfer Questions.

What is fat transfer breast augmentation?

It’s a breast enlargement that uses your own fat instead of an implant. Dr. Austin removes fat from an area like the abdomen or thighs with gentle liposuction, purifies it, and injects it into the breasts for a natural, roughly one-cup increase — while contouring the donor area at the same time. At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery it’s done with the Beautifill® laser system.

Yes. Fat transfer is a true breast augmentation without implants — it uses only your own tissue. The trade-off is that the increase is modest and natural (about a cup), rather than the larger or more projected result an implant can give.

At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery it typically ranges from about $8,400 to $12,500, which includes the liposuction used to harvest your fat. Combining it with a lift costs more. Your written quote is confirmed at consultation, and financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing.

Neither is universally better. Fat transfer gives a natural, modest increase using your own tissue and slims a donor area, with nothing to replace later. Implants can achieve a larger or more projected size in one step. The right choice depends on your goal size, your donor fat, and whether you want an implant — Dr. Austin helps you decide honestly.

Generally about one cup size per session. Fat transfer is designed for a natural enhancement, not a dramatic increase. If you want more than that, an implant — or fat transfer combined with an implant — may suit you better.

Some of the transferred fat is reabsorbed in the first few weeks, which is normal and planned for. The fat that establishes a blood supply is permanent, and your final result settles over three to six months. Beautifill® is designed to harvest fat gently so more of it survives.

Beautifill® is an FDA-cleared laser system that performs the liposuction and fat processing in one gentle, closed step. Handling the fat this carefully helps preserve its viability, so more of the transferred fat tends to survive than with older grafting methods.

Fat transfer requires enough donor fat to harvest, so very slim patients sometimes don’t have quite enough for a meaningful increase. It’s one of the first things Dr. Austin assesses. If donor fat is limited, he’ll talk through your options honestly.

Yes. Fat transfer is often combined with a breast lift when there’s sagging, used to restore soft volume after implant removal (explant), or paired with an implant to refine shape and smooth rippling. Dr. Austin will map the right combination for your goals.
