Facial Fat Transfer

Real volume, from your own body.

Dr. Troy Austin, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon in Augusta, GA

Medically reviewed by Dr. Troy Austin, MD — double board-certified plastic surgeon ◆ Updated July 2026

Facial fat transfer — also called fat grafting or microlipoinjection — restores facial volume using your own fat: it is gently removed from an area like the abdomen or thighs by liposuction, purified, and injected into the face to refill hollow cheeks, under-eyes, temples, and thin lips. Because it uses your own living tissue rather than a synthetic gel, the result looks and feels natural — and once the transferred fat establishes a blood supply, it lasts far longer than dermal filler. At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery in Augusta, GA, Dr. Troy Austin uses fat transfer to restore a rested, youthful fullness without an obvious “done” look.

Two skills in one procedure.

A great fat transfer takes two things done well: artful liposuction to harvest fat gently so the cells survive, and an artist’s eye to place it in the right planes of the face so the result is smooth and even, never lumpy or over-filled. Dr. Austin is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, completed his plastic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia here in Augusta, and trained in general surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

As a full plastic surgeon he can combine fat transfer with a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery as part of broader facial rejuvenation when volume is only part of the picture — and he’ll tell you honestly when filler or another approach would serve you better.

Fat transfer is about restoring what time took, not adding something that looks added. Placed right, your own fat just looks like you. Dr. Troy Austin

Is it right for you?

Hollowing and flatness — where volume has gone.

Facial fat transfer is for the volume loss that comes with age: cheeks that have flattened, under-eyes that look hollow or tired, temples that have narrowed, folds that have deepened, and lips that have thinned. Years of Georgia sun accelerate that loss. It’s ideal if you want a natural, longer-lasting result from your own tissue rather than repeat injectable appointments — and it pairs naturally with a lift when skin has begun to sag, not just deflate.

The big decision

Fat transfer vs. dermal filler.

Both restore volume — but one is your own tissue and lasts, the other is a gel you refresh. Here’s the honest comparison.

Not sure which fits? Many patients start with filler to preview added volume, then choose fat transfer for a lasting result. Dr. Austin will give you a straight recommendation.

Why your own fat

Rented volume vs. your own.

The simplest way to think about it: filler is rented volume; a fat transfer is your own.

Filler is temporary by design

Hyaluronic-acid fillers are excellent for quick, low-downtime volume, but your body breaks them down over months, so you return to maintain the look.

Transferred fat becomes part of you

With a fat transfer, the fat that survives establishes its own blood supply and becomes living tissue in your face — so once it settles, it’s there for the long term rather than fading on a schedule.

A natural, all-you result

Because it’s your own tissue, there’s no synthetic material and no risk of the reactions a foreign gel can rarely cause. The trade-off is a little more downtime up front — which is exactly the conversation to have at your consultation.

Filler first, then fat?

It’s a common, smart path — preview volume with filler, then commit to a lasting fat transfer.

Face & beyond

Facial fat transfer vs. Beautifill & BBL.

“Fat transfer” covers several procedures. This page is about restoring volume in the face; here’s where the others fit.

Facial fat transfer (this page)

Traditional fat grafting to the face — cheeks, under-eyes, temples, lips, jawline, and even the hands — for a natural, lasting refresh.

Beautifill® laser fat transfer

For larger-volume transfers and body areas, Dr. Austin also offers Beautifill, a laser-assisted system that harvests and transfers fat in one streamlined process.

Body & breast

Transferring fat to the buttocks is a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and fat can add natural volume in a breast augmentation — each planned on its own.

One consultation sorts it out. Dr. Austin will match the right technique — and the right area — to your goals.

Investment

How much does facial fat transfer cost in Augusta?

Cost depends on how many areas are treated and whether fat transfer is combined with another procedure such as a facelift or eyelid surgery. In the Augusta area, most facial fat transfer ranges from $3,500 to $8,000. Your exact, all-in quote is confirmed in writing at your consultation.

Single area (under-eyes, lips, or temples) $3,500 – $4,500
Full facial fat transfer (multi-area) $4,500 – $8,000
Hand rejuvenation (fat transfer) $2,500 – $4,000
Added to a facelift or eyelid surgery Quoted together
Consultation with Dr. Austin $100

Your quote depends on the number of areas and the anesthesia used, and includes the surgery center. Financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing.

Procedure, recovery & results

How it's done & what lasts.

The procedure, in three steps

Under local anesthesia with light sedation, Dr. Austin first harvests fat from a donor area such as the abdomen or thighs with gentle liposuction, then purifies it, and finally injects it into the face in small, precise amounts for a smooth, even result.

Recovery week by week

  • Days 1–3: swelling and mild bruising at the donor site and the treated areas; rest and keep your head elevated.
  • About 1 week: most people feel comfortable returning to everyday activities and work.
  • Weeks 2–4: the bulk of swelling settles; the face can look a little fuller at first by design.

Does all the fat survive, and how long does it last?

Not every fat cell survives the transfer — a portion is naturally reabsorbed in the first few months, which is why Dr. Austin slightly over-fills at the start. The fat that establishes a blood supply is long-lasting, giving you a result that ages naturally with you rather than fading on a filler’s schedule.

A little fuller at first. Some early over-correction is intentional — it settles as a portion of the fat reabsorbs.

Good to know

Fat transfer Questions.

What is facial fat transfer (fat grafting)?

Facial fat transfer, also called fat grafting or microlipoinjection, restores facial volume using your own fat. Fat is gently removed from an area like the abdomen or thighs by liposuction, purified, and injected into the face to refill hollow cheeks, under-eyes, temples, and thin lips. Because it’s your own living tissue, the result looks and feels natural.

They serve different goals. Dermal filler is fast, low-downtime, and reversible but temporary, so you return to maintain it. Facial fat transfer uses your own tissue for a natural, longer-lasting result, with a little more downtime up front. Many patients preview volume with filler first, then choose fat transfer for a lasting result.

A portion of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed in the first few months; the fat that establishes a blood supply is long-lasting and becomes living tissue in your face. That’s why results are considered lasting rather than temporary like filler, though your face still ages naturally over time.

Facial fat transfer can restore volume in the cheeks, under-eyes (tear troughs), temples, nasolabial folds, and lips, and refine the jawline. The same technique can also rejuvenate aging hands. Dr. Austin will map the areas that will give you the most natural improvement at your consultation.

In the Augusta area, a single-area facial fat transfer runs about $3,500–$4,500 and a full multi-area treatment about $4,500–$8,000, with hand rejuvenation around $2,500–$4,000. Your written, all-in quote is confirmed at consultation, and financing is available.

Under local anesthesia with light sedation, Dr. Austin harvests fat from a donor area with gentle liposuction, purifies it, and injects it into the face in small, precise amounts for a smooth, even result — all in one outpatient procedure.

Good candidates are healthy adults with facial volume loss or hollowing who want a natural, longer-lasting result from their own tissue, and who have enough donor fat to harvest. If sagging skin is the main issue rather than lost volume, a facelift may serve you better — often the two are combined.

Expect swelling and mild bruising at both the donor site and the face for the first several days. Most people return to everyday activities in about a week, and the bulk of swelling settles over the first few weeks. The face can look a little fuller at first by design.

No — a portion of the fat is naturally reabsorbed in the first few months, which is normal and expected. Dr. Austin slightly over-fills at the start to account for it, so your settled result reflects the fat that establishes a lasting blood supply.

This page covers traditional fat grafting to the face. For larger-volume or body transfers, Dr. Austin also offers Beautifill, a laser-assisted fat transfer system. Transferring fat to the buttocks is a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and fat can add natural volume in a breast augmentation — each is its own procedure.
