Rested eyes, not a different face.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Troy Austin, MD — double board-certified plastic surgeon ◆ Updated July 2026

Blepharoplasty (pronounced BLEF-uh-roh-plas-tee), or eyelid surgery, removes excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to create a more open, rested, and youthful look around the eyes. On the upper lids it lifts the heavy, hooded skin that can make you look tired — or even block your side vision; on the lower lids it smooths the puffy “bags” that make you look worn out. At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery in Augusta, GA, Dr. Troy Austin performs upper, lower, and combined eyelid surgery — for cosmetic reasons and, when drooping skin obstructs vision, for functional ones too.

Millimeters matter around the eyes.

Eyelid surgery is a game of millimeters — remove too little skin and nothing changes; remove too much and the eye can’t close properly. Getting it right takes a surgeon with genuine surgical judgment. Dr. Austin is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, completed his plastic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia right here in Augusta, and trained in general surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

He’ll give you a straight answer about what eyelid surgery can and can’t do for your eyes — and whether a brow issue or a skin-quality issue is really what’s bothering you — before you ever schedule surgery.

The goal of a blepharoplasty is for people to say you look rested, not to say you look operated on. Restraint is the whole art. Dr. Troy Austin

Is it right for you?

“You look tired” — when you're not.

People keep asking if you’re tired or upset, when you feel fine. Concealer no longer hides the puffiness, and heavy upper lids make eye makeup pointless — sometimes they even crowd your field of vision when you read or drive. That’s what eyelid surgery addresses: the excess skin and fat that age the eyes faster than the rest of the face. If the real problem is a low, heavy brow rather than the lid itself, Dr. Austin will tell you — because a brow lift, not a blepharoplasty, is what fixes that.

Types of eyelid surgery

Upper, lower, or both?

The right blepharoplasty depends on which lids bother you and why. Here’s how the options compare.

Eyelid surgery is frequently combined with a brow lift when a heavy brow is part of the picture, or with skin resurfacing for fine lines — so Dr. Austin treats the whole upper face, not just one part of it.

Cosmetic vs. functional

Functional or cosmetic?

This is the part most eyelid pages skip: an upper blepharoplasty isn’t always purely cosmetic. When drooping skin is heavy enough to block your vision, it can be a functional, medically necessary procedure.

Functional (medical) blepharoplasty

When excess upper-eyelid skin hangs low enough to obstruct your side vision, removing it is considered functional, typically documented with a visual-field test. Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery is a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance, but for a functional upper blepharoplasty we can provide the documentation you need to seek reimbursement from your insurer on your own. Dr. Austin can assess whether your lids may qualify.

Cosmetic blepharoplasty

When the goal is a refreshed, less-tired appearance rather than restoring vision, eyelid surgery is cosmetic and paid for out of pocket, with financing available. Lower-eyelid surgery for under-eye bags is almost always cosmetic.

Which one are you?

Many patients are a mix: a functional upper lid and a cosmetic touch to match. Your consultation sorts out exactly what you need, so there are no surprises.

If it blocks your vision, tell us.

When heavy upper-lid skin obstructs your vision, a visual-field test documents it, and we can provide that paperwork so you may seek reimbursement from your insurer on your own. Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery is a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance.

Straight talk

What it fixes — and what it doesn't.

Blepharoplasty is powerful for the right problem and useless for the wrong one. Being honest about the difference is how you avoid a disappointing result.

What it does fix

Hooded, heavy upper-lid skin; puffy lower-lid “bags” from protruding fat; and the general tired, aged look those create. On the upper lid, results are often long-lasting.

What it won’t fix

Eyelid surgery does not erase crow’s feet or the fine lines at the corners of the eyes, and it won’t lift a heavy, sagging brow. It also won’t remove dark under-eye circles caused by pigment or by hollows — though it can help when those shadows come from puffy bags casting a shadow.

What pairs with it

For crow’s feet and fine lines, resurfacing or a neuromodulator complements surgery; for a low brow, a brow lift is the real answer; and for hollow tear troughs, filler can help. Dr. Austin plans the eyes as a whole so one procedure doesn’t leave an obvious mismatch.

Lids, not lines. Blepharoplasty fixes excess skin and bags — crow’s feet and brow position are different problems with different solutions.

Investment

How much does eyelid surgery cost in Augusta?

Cost depends on whether you’re treating the upper lids, lower lids, or both. In the Augusta area, most cosmetic eyelid surgery ranges from $3,800 to $10,800. Your exact quote is confirmed in writing at your consultation.

Upper blepharoplasty $3,800 – $6,000
Lower blepharoplasty $4,800 – $6,800
Upper + lower (combined) $7,500 – $10,800
Functional upper (vision-obstructing) Varies
Consultation with Dr. Austin $100

Your quote depends on whether one or both lids are treated and the anesthesia used — and includes the surgery center. A functional upper blepharoplasty for vision-obstructing skin is quoted separately; we can provide documentation you may submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery is a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance. Financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing.

Candidacy, recovery & results

Healing, timing & what lasts.

Are you a candidate?

Good candidates are in general good health, don’t smoke, have realistic expectations, and are bothered by heavy upper lids or under-eye bags. Certain dry-eye and thyroid-eye conditions need to be discussed first, which is exactly what your consultation is for.

Recovery week by week

  • Days 1–3: bruising and swelling peak; cool compresses and head elevation help. Plan to rest and have someone drive you home.
  • Week 1: stitches typically come out around 5–7 days; you’ll feel presentable to yourself but still visibly healing.
  • Weeks 1–2: most people return to work and social life, with any lingering bruising easily covered by makeup once cleared.
  • Weeks 2–6: swelling continues to settle; you’ll ease back into exercise as Dr. Austin clears you.

How long does it last?

Upper-eyelid results are often long-lasting — because the excess skin is removed, many people never need it done again, though the face keeps aging naturally around it. Lower-lid results are also durable. Eyelid surgery has no known negative effect on your vision.

The first three days do the heavy lifting. Cool compresses and keeping your head elevated make the biggest difference to early swelling.

Good to know

Eyelid surgery Questions.

What is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)?

Blepharoplasty (pronounced BLEF-uh-roh-plas-tee) is surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids for a more open, rested look. On the upper lids it lifts heavy, hooded skin; on the lower lids it smooths puffy bags. It can be cosmetic or, when drooping skin blocks vision, functional.

Upper blepharoplasty removes heavy, hooded skin from the upper lids through an incision hidden in the natural lid crease, and may be functional if the skin blocks vision. Lower blepharoplasty smooths under-eye bags through an incision just below the lashes or inside the lid, and is almost always cosmetic. Many patients have both together.

Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery is a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance. Upper-lid surgery is sometimes medically necessary when heavy, drooping skin obstructs your vision, usually documented with a visual-field test. In that case we can provide paperwork you may submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement on your own. Lower-lid surgery for bags is cosmetic. Dr. Austin can assess whether your lids may qualify as functional.

In the Augusta area, an upper blepharoplasty runs about $3,800–$6,000, a lower blepharoplasty about $4,800–$6,800, and both together roughly $7,500–$10,800. Your written quote is confirmed at consultation, and financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing.

Upper-eyelid results are often long-lasting — because the excess skin is removed, many people never need it repeated, though the face keeps aging naturally around it. Lower-lid results are also durable. Eyelid surgery has no known negative effect on your vision.

Bruising and swelling peak in the first two to three days and are eased with cool compresses and keeping your head elevated. Stitches usually come out around 5–7 days, and most people are back to work and social life within one to two weeks, covering any lingering bruising with makeup once cleared. Swelling fully settles over several weeks.

Not directly. Blepharoplasty removes excess eyelid skin and puffy bags, but it does not erase crow’s feet or fine lines at the corners of the eyes, and it won’t remove dark circles caused by pigment or hollows. It can help shadows caused by puffy bags. Resurfacing, a neuromodulator, or filler can address those other concerns alongside surgery.

Yes. Eyelid surgery is frequently combined with a brow lift when a low, heavy brow is part of the tired look, and it pairs well with a facelift or skin resurfacing for a balanced result. If a heavy brow — not the lid itself — is the real issue, Dr. Austin will tell you, since a brow lift is what corrects that.

Good candidates are in general good health, don’t smoke, have realistic expectations, and are bothered by heavy upper lids or under-eye bags. Certain dry-eye or thyroid-eye conditions should be discussed first. A consultation with Dr. Austin determines whether eyelid surgery — or a different procedure like a brow lift — is the right fit.
