How does Laser Skin Resurfacing work?

Laser resurfacing is sometimes referred to as laser peel, laser vaporization, or lasabrasion and eliminates imperfections on the surface of the skin such as wrinkles, blemishes, discoloration, and acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing works by directing pulsating light beams to gently and precisely lift away the skin’s surface, layer by layer, removing imperfections, marks, and growths on the skin’s surface, while uncovering a fresh, vibrant layer of new skin. Laser resurfacing also triggers the body’s natural production of collagen, which means you will see increased improvements for several weeks after treatment.

Who should consider Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is recommended for healthy adult men and women who want to treat marks and imperfections such as blemishes, scars, sun spots, age spots, and discoloration on the skin. To learn more about laser skin resurfacing and whether you may be a good candidate for this procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Austin for a full evaluation of your condition.

How is Laser Skin Resurfacing performed?

The laser skin resurfacing procedure is highly customized to each patient, and we may use any of our various types of lasers to perform your treatment, depending on factors such as the condition being treated and its severity, as well as your skin type and any hereditary considerations. The procedure takes about an hour, and you will have to wear protective eyewear during the treatment. After cleansing your skin thoroughly, we will apply a topical anesthetic or local anesthesia to prevent any discomfort during the session. The procedure is performed using a handheld laser device to direct pulsating beams of light into the skin, lifting the outermost layer of skin cells and eliminating any surface imperfections it contains, revealing a layer of fresh, new skin.

What can I expect after Laser Skin Resurfacing?

We will prescribe a special ointment to keep skin moist and relieve any soreness you may experience after treatment. Typically, the skin will crust and peel after about a day, much as it does when sunburned, and this process may take about seven to 10 days. After this, your skin will be extremely sensitive and tender for up to two months as the young new skin cells surface. It is extremely important to protect your skin fully from sun exposure during this crucial healing period, so you must commit to wearing sun protective hats and apply sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher every time you go outdoors. Women should hold off on wearing makeup for about 10-12 days. Men should avoid shaving facial hair for one or two weeks following treatment to protect sensitive new skin cells.

Eliminate marks, blemishes, and imperfections on the skin’s surface while exposing a fresh new layer of skin with laser skin resurfacing. Choosing the right doctor for this delicate procedure is important.
